Every beginning starts in the dark.
In the Hawaiian understanding of creation, all things rise from Pō: the deep night, the origin, the unseen source. From Pō they unfold into Ao, the light of day, the world made visible. It is a movement Scripture opens with too: darkness over the face of the deep, and then, the moment. “Let there be light.” (Kinohi · Genesis 1). Two ways of telling one truth: creation moves out of darkness into light, from source into life.
The Shorts carry that whole passage. The Lōkahi mark holds three points as one: Ke Akua, ʻāina, kānaka. It is not stamped once but sublimated across the entire cloth, an all-over geometry that surrounds the wearer on every side. The mark is everywhere because the becoming is everywhere: we are always being drawn out of the dark and into the light. The ʻUhane wordmark rests at the left leg.
